The first movie to be screened as part of the OPEN CINEMA series is Andrzej Wajda’s “The Promised Land”, a brilliant adaptation of Władysław Reymont’s novel about Łódź manufacturers. First, we focus on Łódź as the city of four cultures, while our future meetings will explore other cultural fields.

“The Promised Land” [“Ziemia Obiecana”], directed by Andrzej Wajda, Poland 1974 [163 min.]

The movie is an adaptation of Władysław Reymont’s Nobel prize-winning novel, which describes “the mechanism of making money”. In the late 19th-century Łódź, a Pole, a German, and a Jew join forces to establish a factory and capitalize on their different backgrounds to increase the efficiency of their business and come out on top. But will their success be at the expense of their friendship?

The outstanding acting of Daniel Olbrychski, Wojciech Pszoniak, and Andrzej Seweryn, the unforgettable score by Wojciech Kilar, and the dynamic cinematography by Witold Sobociński and Edward Kłosiński, which gave the movie its pulsating rhythm, all contributed to the legendary status of “The Promised Land”. Wajda’s Academy award-nominated picture still ranks among the finest accomplishments of Polish cinematography. Hailed as a masterpiece by Martin Scorsese, it was voted the best ever Polish movie in a last year’s poll of the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź.
